Course Information

The range of services provided by a PSW is determined by the individual needs of each client and may include assistance with routine activities of living including personal care, mobility, home management, meal preparation, family care, and assisting with social and recreational activities.

As front-line workers, Personal Support Workers must develop a broad range of abilities beyond technical skills. They must provide not only for the comfort, safety, and well-being of their clients, but also demonstrate kindness and respect for those in their care. A positive attitude, solid skills, and a sensitive approach are critical to the well-being and health of the clients.

Program Outcomes

Graduates will be able to:

  • Effectively provide care and assistance to clients and families in order to live fulfilling lives in their communities and in institutions.
  • Care for clients in a sensitive and respectful manner.
  • Assist with meal preparation, hygiene, bathing, dressing and household tasks.
  • Provide comfort and peace of mind to clients, as well as much-needed relief and respite to their family members.

Admissions Requirements

Academic Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
  • OR Is 18 years of age or older on or before the program begins AND can pass a qualifying test that has been approved by the Superintendent
  • Equivalent: Foreign credentials must be translated in English and assessed for Grade 12 equivalency
  • OR Mature Student with a score of 18 or more on the Wonderlic SLE

English Proficiency

  • IELTS – International English Language Testing Services – Minimum average score of 6.0 with no subject test score lower than 5.5
  • CAEL – Overall 60 with no section below 60
  • TOEFL –Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based test (IBT) – overall 80, with the minimum of each component: Reading 20; Listening 20; Speaking 20; Writing 20

Important Note

  • CAT and CAST are no longer approved. Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and do not have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Police Criminal Check and Medical Test are required to do International and Domestic Students.
