Course Descriptions
This course is designed to give students a baseline of mathematics skills to bridge entrance into the mathematics courses required by the diploma program. The course introduces students to core mathematical concepts including basic numeracy, algebra, factorials, pre-calculus, Venn diagrams and statistics. Students will practice the mathematics concepts through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to give students both practical hands-on experience with the current Windows operating system and Microsoft Office applications, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Publisher. The course introduces students to core functions to create and edit a variety of business documents, to navigate and format documents, create tables and multipage reports, create presentations, format workbook text and data, calculate data with formulas and functions. enhance page layout and design as well as work with templates, styles, and themes. Basic desktop publishing skills using Microsoft Publisher to create a flyer and brochure is also reviewed. Students will practice the basic computing concepts through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to give students an introduction to the theory of accounting, including the language of financial accounting utilizing both practical hands-on experience and a focus on the principles of accounting and stakeholders in the organization. Generally accepted accounting principles and concepts are emphasized in the preparation of financial statements. Students will practice accounting concepts through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This subject is designed to give students the opportunity to improve their English and communications skills for the business environment. The course explores the writing process, academic referencing using APA style format, effective communication styles, and persuasive business writing techniques. Students will also practice writing effective business communications, including memoranda, email, and research reports. Additional skills include cross-cultural communication and proofreading and editing skills. Students will practice their English and writing skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to review introductory economic principles which apply to society’s efforts to solve economic problems. Students will consider basic theory of consumer behavior, production and costs, analysis of pricing in competitive and monopolistic markets. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This subject is designed to provide students with a review of pre-calculus mathematics and will provide exposure to the mathematical concepts needed for success in the modern business world. Students will learn about percentages, ratios and proportions, exponents, logarithmic and exponential functions, introduction to derivatives, linear systems, difference equations, plotting, graphing and reading descriptive charts, annuities and installment buying. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This subject is designed to provide students with an introduction to the basic concepts and principles of the marketing function. This course will prepare students for advanced marketing courses. The emphasis is on learning and applying marketing concepts in the changing global environment. This course is designed to challenge students with an introspective look at some of today’s most important ethical dilemmas. Students will learn that ethical standards employed by businesses and corporations concern the quality of human behaviors in those organizations and how to make ethical decisions. This course is designed to provide students with the continuation of Accounting Concepts I. Students will learn about different forms of ownership, capital assets and liabilities. Financial statement analysis and cash flow statements are introduced. This course examines the impact of law upon business. Students gain a basic understanding of fundamental legal frameworks and a broad range of legal issues that could impact business operations. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the essentials of financial management with a view to increasing profits in a business enterprise. Topics include analysis of financial performance, cost-volume profit analysis, financing alternatives and costs, management of working capital, budgeting, and capital investment decisions. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to applied statistics and data analysis as well as managerial decision making using both quantitative and qualitative tools. Students will explore topics such as: collecting and exploring data, basic interference, simple and multiple linear regression, probability, and statistical computing. Students will learn how these tools are applied in business decision making and will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of the interactions among individuals and organizations and how it impacts others within the organization. This course covers value systems, motivation, teams, effective communication, power and conflict, organizational culture and structure, leadership, ethics, and organizational change. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to international business as it relates to managing business operations. The focus of the course is on how business decisions are influenced by culture, economics, and marketing. Additional emphasis is on the opportunities and problems associated with doing business in a global environment. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to provide students with an overview of economic issues including the determination of output, employment, unemployment, interest rates and inflation. Topics include monetary and fiscal policies, public debt, and international economic issues. Basic models of macroeconomics are introduced and principles within the experience of the North American and other economies are illustrated. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge.
This course is designed to provide students with an introduction to the study of design, planning, establishment, control, operation and improvement of the activities/processes that create a firm’s final products and/or services. The course will also examine the role of operations management in the organization by exploring several concepts and techniques. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of how to conduct a job search and how to succeed in the workplace. This course includes self-reflection, cover letter and resume, job search and interview techniques. This course is designed to provide students with a focus on workplace diversity, Canadian business practices and cross-cultural communication skills. Students will practice their critical thinking skills through in-class activities and exercises designed to help retain and apply their knowledge and to enable them to work more effectively in an intercultural environment.
